Bill Sample

Music Director & Arranger

Bill Sample has been a force in the West Coast music scene for many years as a sought after performer, musical director and teacher. A recent highlight of Bill's career includes playing on the 2008 Grammy winning Ratatouille soundtrack. During his tenure as Music Director for David Foster, he worked with Brian Adams, Celine Dion, Peter Cetera and Kenny Loggins to name a few.

His recording credits include Leon Bibb, Eric Bibb, Michelle Wright, Simple Plan, and Christopher Wong.  He has also performed with Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Robben Ford, Frances Yip, Teresa Carpio, Bianca Wu, and Anthony Lun. In 2003 he was inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame.

In 2010 he received both a Lifetime Achievement Award and Most Influential Jazz Musician from the Royal Canadian Music Project, and his band Sample Stearns Band (from the 1970's) received the Most Influential Group Award. In 2013 he was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and in 2014 he received the Ovation Award for “The Raymur Mothers” (Best New Work). He is currently on the faculty of Vancouver Community College where he teaches jazz piano and composition. In March he released his first album, The Bill Sample Trio, entitled “Small”.
